World Weightlifting Championships

Olympic lifting is a staple of our programming and I don’t see that changing. Clean and jerks and snatches improve your speed, strength, power, coordination, mobility, agility, endurance, balance, and accuracy. I’m sure I can come up with more but you get the point. While the people in the gym that really love these lifts probably already know this but the Weightlifting World Championships are this week and they are being held in Anaheim, California. The event being held in the US is a nice perk because the pacific time zone makes the action much easier to follow than when the event is held on the other side of the world. While I understand that watching this event is like watching Lebron James play basketball or Serena Williams play tennis and that our skill sets don’t exactly translate to what we are seeing. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the sport and the lifts. 2016 CrossFit Open is here and you should sign up!

The 2016 CrossFit Open is right around the corner.  For those of you new to CrossFit this is how the “Open” works.  For five weeks, there are five workouts, thousands of athletes will have the opportunity to participate in a WOD and submit their scores online. From those scores, the top males, females, and teams from each region will go on to Regionals. The top five from each Region then go on to the CrossFit Games in California where the best of the best will throw down on the big stage in pursuit of the title of  “Fittest on Earth” over several days in July.  Last year, the “Open” had more than 275,000 athletes participate from around the world.   I think your name should be added to that statistic this year.  Anyone…. yes anyone… can sign up. The Open workouts are designed to be tough but doable. If you have been following LGCF programming for a couple of months, you are capable of participating in the Open. You might only finish one round in an As Many Rounds As Possible (AMRAP) workout. You might not make it all the way through an increasing weightlifting ladder. You might finish dead last, yes I said finish dead last. But you can do it.    Like many CrossFitters, I’m thrilled for the event, and so is Lisa. The Open has become a lively event for our LGCF community, having 50 participants last year. We always encourage our members to register, even when they balk at the idea. Introducing the idea of physical competition to someone often evokes a myriad of responses and emotions they probably haven’t felt in awhile. We keep encouraging though, because we know the thrill that awaits you on the other side of diving into the Open and accomplishing a small win in your fitness.
